How to Get an Ohio Driver License

Step 1: Get an Ohio Temporary Instruction Permit (TIPIC)

Ohio applicants must pass the knowledge test and vision screening to obtain a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC).

The Ohio knowledge test contains 40 multiple-choice questions about motor vehicle laws and traffic signs, and applicants must score at least 75% to pass.

For minors: the Ohio BMV permits applicants to begin the TIPIC process at 15 years and 6 months. Ohio driver-training rules allow a licensed driver education provider to accept a student at 15 years and 5 months.

For ages 18–20: after passing the knowledge test and vision screening, the applicant purchases the TIPIC from a deputy registrar.

Ohio Driver License Requirements for Drivers Under 18

Before a minor can obtain an Ohio probationary driver license, the Ohio BMV requires all of the following:

Complete driver education: 24 hours of classroom or approved online instruction plus 8 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction through licensed driver training providers.
Complete 50 supervised driving hours: at least 10 of those hours must be at night.
Hold the TIPIC for at least six months.
Pass the Ohio Driving and Skills tests.

The 24-hour online Class D course covers the education portion only. Behind-the-wheel instruction and supervised practice driving are separate requirements.

Ohio Driver License Requirements for Ages 18–20

Ohio requires beginning drivers ages 18 through 20 to complete Class D driver education before obtaining a driver license.

The current Ohio BMV requirements include:

24 hours of classroom or approved online driver education
8 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction
50 hours of supervised practice driving with an eligible adult, including at least 10 hours at night

Unlike the minor probationary-license requirements, the Ohio BMV’s current ages 18–20 requirements do not list a six-month TIPIC holding period.

Can Ohio Class D Driver Education Be Completed Online?

Yes. Ohio permits the 24-hour Class D education requirement to be completed through an approved online driver education program offered by a licensed provider.

What Happens If an Ohio Driver Age 21+ Fails the First Driving Test?

An applicant for an initial Ohio driver license who is age 21 or older and fails the first road or maneuverability portion of the driving test must complete an approved abbreviated adult driver training course before a second attempt if the applicant has not completed qualifying driver training within the previous 12 months.

Ohio allows an abbreviated adult pathway that begins with a 4-hour state-approved online course. After the online course, the applicant must also complete one of Ohio’s applicable driving options:

4 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed instructor, or
24 hours of driving with a licensed driver age 21 or older, with no more than 4 hours completed in one day. This option requires the BMV 5789 Twenty-Four Hour Affidavit.

Ohio Driver Education Completion Certificates
