Class D – Beginning Drivers Under 21
- Start driver education: Ohio schools may generally enroll a beginning driver at age 15 years and 5 months.
- Get your TIPIC: At age 15 years and 6 months or older, pass the Ohio knowledge test and vision screening and obtain your TIPIC.
- Complete 24 hours online: Finish your Ohio Class D online driver education course and final exam.
- Complete 8 hours behind the wheel: Arrange professional driving instruction with a licensed Ohio driving school after receiving your online completion certificate.
- Log 50 supervised hours: Include at least 10 hours of night driving.
- Under 18: Hold the TIPIC for at least 6 months. This six-month hold does not apply to ages 18–20.
- Pass the driving and skills test: Then complete the BMV license issuance process.
Abbreviated Adult – Eligible Drivers Age 21+
- Complete the 4-hour online course: Finish the required Ohio Abbreviated Adult online instruction, identity requirements, and final exam.
- Receive your completion certificate: After successful course completion, your Ohio Abbreviated Adult completion certificate is processed.
- Complete the applicable driving requirement: Ohio requires an additional driving component before the applicable retest. This is completed separately from the MyDrivePermit 4-hour online course.
- Take your next Ohio driving test: Once the required training and documentation are complete, return for the applicable road and/or maneuverability test.
